You don’t need window cleaner or a roll of paper towels to clean windows. Instead, you will push the dirt around and leave streaks. This is how to clean your windows in spring.

A List of Window Cleaning Products

Soft-bristled toothbrush — Hold the brush in your hand like you would for cleaning windows. Do you feel it is comfortable? You should have it, especially if there are many windows in your house.

Premium squeegee – Choose one with a sturdy metal frame and a rubber blade that can be replaced. The type of windows that you have will determine the size of your squeegee. A 12-inch tool is best for picture windows. Multi-pane windows? Measure the pane first before you shop to make sure the squeegee fits inside.

Strip applicator for cloth heads — This tool is similar to a squeegee, but it uses a cloth strip rather than rubber. Make sure you get the right size for your window.

Fine steel wool and cleansing powder with oxalic acids — Both can remove mineral stains.

Nylon scrubbing pads — These window cleaning tools are useful for up tree pitch or bug droppings from your windows.

Bucket – Use a smaller size to move it from one window to another and carry it up a ladder.

Ladder – Choose one that is sturdy and has a platform to place your bucket.

White vinegar or dishwashing liquid — Both will do the job.

Lint-free Rags — Avoid leaving streaks and use new rags. Dry your rags with no fabric softener to prevent it from transferring to your windows.

Rubber gloves — Keep your hands protected from drying chemicals.

How to wash exterior windows?

  1. Mix the cleaning solution. For a soapy cleaner, add one teaspoon dishwashing liquid for every two gallons hot water. Do not add more soap. The more soap you use, the more residue will remain. Mix 1/4 cup of white vinegar with 2 cups of water if you are using white vinegar.
  2. To remove dirt and webs from your window, use the soft-bristled toothbrush.
  3. Then dip the strip applicator into the cleaning solution and then squeeze out any excess solution.
  4. Use the strip applicator to scrub the glass, then switch to the nylon scrubbing pads if necessary to remove any dirt or debris.
  5. Clean the windows with a squeegee. Depending on your preference, you can do this in a variety of ways. Some prefer to start at the top and pull the tool down straight down, while others prefer working horizontally. Others use the reverse-S method to open up windows of solution. You can try each method to find the one that works best for you. However, make sure to use a damp squeegee to prevent blade skipping and overlap passes. After each swipe, wipe it clean with a lint-free towel.
  6. Use a clean, dry cloth to wipe off any lint from the frames and panes.

To prevent any water from splashing on your floors, place a towel at bottom of the washing machine.
